What do we need to know about the distinctive challenges facing leaders of nonprofit (NPO) organizations and initiatives if we want to coach them successfully?

This workshop will address some of the most important challenges, and give participants the opportunity to role play coaching NPO executives whose daily experience is forged by facing them. Among the primary challenges that will be highlighted are:

  1. How the comparatively small size and scale of the vast majority of NPOs requires leaders to be incredibly flexible generalists and achieve  organizational goals with very limited financial and people resources;

  2. How they must persuade others to work together to achieve the NPO’s goals  when meaning and mission are far more important than compensation or other financial incentives; and

  3. How organizational success requires shared leadership that entails persuading and finding common ground among a dizzying array of constituencies and stakeholders, including staff, a volunteer board, numerous other volunteers, a wide range of funders, partner organizations, and other interests and voices whose expectations and even evaluation of leader and NPO performance often differ.

The seminar will also give the ICF-St. Louis Chapter the opportunity to think through how to most effectively seek out NPO leaders if it chooses to donate coaching services to them.
