Avoiding Compassion Fatigue in Coaching
As coaches we listen well with presence. Whilst it is a privilege to act as a thinking partner and witness someone on a growth journey, working with the human condition can take an emotional toll! Supervision plays an essential part but is only one piece of the jigsaw that helps us to stay focused, balanced and in service to those we work with. Perhaps we have heavy client caseloads or work as internal coaches whilst juggling other priorities. Perhaps we are solo self employed coaches (as myself) trying to juggle all the aspects of running a business alongside client work.
We can be at risk of compassion fatigue and/or burnout as recognised by the ICF. This session will use the boiling frog analogy to raise awareness of the insidious nature of these conditions and how easily they can creep up on us, impacting all aspects of our lives and certainly our coaching presence and practice.
This 90 minute session will focus on:
- identifying the causes and signs of compassion fatigue and burnout
- sharing real stories from current research which brings together commonalities in people in high pressure roles who experienced burnout but also those who did not.
- evidence based tools and strategies to use in your own life as a coach but also to support or share with your coaching clients where appropriate
As a coach who specialises in supporting people who feel they are approaching burnout, I believe it is my responsibility to practice what I coach. I use these tools personally and will share my own personal experience of heading towards burnout before I made a mindset and behaviour shift.
Learning Objectives:
1. Clarify the potential causes and signs of compassion fatigue and burnout as it relates to coaching practice.
2. Understand the common factors amongst those who experience burnout and the strategies used by those who avoid it
3. Undertake a self assessment to identify areas that you can make small shifts in mindset or behaviour to inoculate yourself against burnout
Core Competencies Addressed:
Demonstrates Ethical Practice, Embodies a Coaching Mindset, Cultivates Trust and Safety, Maintains Presence
Participants will earn .75 Core Competency and .75 Resource Development CCEs for attending this program.
